"Emergency rooms are filling up with people breaking limbs on slick streets. "
Does anyone know why the city/Bezirke do not clear the snow/ice off the sidewalks? Of course the roads are nice and clear. It's so scary out there for pedestrians. I have lived in places with more snow and cold and it wasn't this bad.
The owners of individual buildings are responsible for clearing ice from the sidewalk in front of their building. And often they just don't do it, or not well or often enough. And, of course, there's zero enforcement of this rule. Or sense of responsibility. At my kid's school, for example, they cleared the area directly before the entrance but no one bothers to clear the sidewalk for 50m in either direction - they sprinkle a few useless stones. It's a literal ice rink. You'd think it would occur to the Hausmeister or headmaster to spend an hour to chip away the ice.
