Most of my life, I grew up without public transit -- except for the one year I lived in Paris -- and, even though I've lived here over a decade, I still find it amazing that I can leave my house without a plan or schedule in mind and get to anywhere inside the Ringbahn in about 45 minutes. There's a lot of things that can make a ride awful, of course (always beware the empty car!), and shit can breakdown; but it's pretty reliable for the most part. I was happy to keep paying my monthly fee even in the pandemic. And I also love how the BVG has a sense of humour about themselves. At the end of the day, this system is crazy complex and they're managing the chaos a lot better than we give them credit for. I love also that I have a card, and with it I can get on the metro, a tram, a bus, a regional train, or even a ferry without having to think abou it. I know there's a lot of hate out there; but, from where I'm coming from, it's a massive improvement. When I lived in Seattle I would sit in heavy traffic for hours commuting; I do not miss that one bit.
The thing at Warschauerstraße... I'm all for building more apartments, but I'm with Andrew. that neighborhood is awful and I wouldn't want to live there.
Yesterday I had to go through Alex to run some errands and they've turned the station into a gerbil maze with construction...more of a gerbil maze than it usually is. The exit I usually go out of had a grill in front of it. I managed to find another exit and then walked past the main East entrance to the Sbahn/RE platforms and it was also gated off with a sign that said "till around 2030". Maybe I misunderstood -- that happens a lot -- but what the Hell? I haven't heard anything on RBB24 about massive, year long projects at Alex. You guys know anything?
Bear's Knees: Kohlenquelle
It's a bar/café/restaurant in P-Berg. They've got a great terrace that fills up quickly and the prices are very low. It's not the cleanest place in the world, but it has a lot of charm and I go there regularly after my walk through the 'hood. You can still get a decent coffee there for 2€20... Because they serve food, there's no smoking inside. So, there's that to keep in your back pocket.
Thanks, Walter. Alexanderplatz station is being refurbished. RE: Kohlenquelle, that's practically my Stammkneipe. We're trying to not over-hype P'Berg because Andrew and I both live there. But yes!!! Love the place. Especially the Käsespätzle for lunch.
Sorry, I didn't know. I live in P'Berg too, since 2016. If I post again, I'll avoid the Kiez and talk about something else. Maybe C-Base...
I've actually never tried their food, but I think Kohlenquelle's cakes are all home made. I like how the clientelle is a little all over the place. You got old folks -- like me -- reading a paper or a book; and then you got the youngins running around, living their best lives. It's nice. The only caveat, if you want to sit on the terrace, you have to be with other people. You also have to get there early on a sunny day.
Looks like the post title is just "Recording 2026-05-04 14:16" at the moment. Prematurely published, or clever engagement strategy? (Getting flashbacks to the time I accidentally hit the send button on an email blast to a few hundred people with the subject "IMG_6433". I think it had a higher conversion rate than anything else I'd sent for that client before.)

That would be exactly what happened. I thought "publish" meant "go live." Grrrr.
