First, have you ever had a spam comment here? Why do we have to have two factor checks for substack if we're already logged in?

What I was GOING to say was imagine how fast the train to Norway would be if it was going direct from Hamburg to Copenhagen, but yeah your article on that tunnel was pretty depressing.

Why do greens in Germany protest against trains??? Trains are the good guys!

Well, I'm not going anywhere. If nothing else, I'm doubling down on Berlin.

I agree that Russia is acting on what it thinks is an existential threat from the West; but we watched the tanks roll into Ukraine. Do they think that our memories and attention spans are that short?!?! Nato expantion for a threat (the U.S.S.R) that didn't exist anymore was a huge mistake...driven by those sweet military contracts; but I think it's pretty clear who the aggressor was.

But I'm just shlub who makes computers work; what do I know?

Russia doesn't really believe the West is an existential threat. That's just a story its leaders tell its people to justify the butchery in Ukraine.

It's so hard to tell what's real anymore. I'm trying to follow the news, but there are just too many parts I don't understand and don't have time to delve into. I won't disagree with the term "butchery", though. It's just awful. And I see it in the refugees at the Hejmo Sprachcafé. Just last Wednesday, 3 or 4 of the people at my table to practice their German were Ukrianian. And that's pretty standard. It's all rough stuff.

I think Putin thinks he's under existential threat which is true we're all going to die as individuals. But Putin must know the idea of Russia won't go away, though he's at risk of destroying the "russian federation" which given what he's done to all the leaders of the non russian RF members would be a merciful outcome. If Russia were "only" a country the size and might of Germany it would still be pretty cool, and everyone would take it seriously. Maybe it could develop a real economy not just an extractive one.
