Is it just me or does Verdi strike a lot even though the job fundamentally hasn’t changed? No other group of professions strikes like that. At some point they get zero sympathy. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
These aren't jobs with career tracks and where every employee has an annual review and gets (ostensibly) performance-based raises. These are factory-level jobs that are the meat of the economy and where people can easily get exploited if institutions like unions don't support them and help keep working conditions fair.
I get that. But have the working conditions changed since the last time they striked? That’s what always seems to have me scratching my head. Same job, same conditions since the last time they striked. Obviously I’m not deeply involved. Perhaps Verdi is a union so large that one doesn’t notice who exactly is striking except “Verdi is striking again”.
Seems like it's become standard to stage a Warnstreik during negotiations. That didn't happen so much in the past. Workers have more leverage because of the demographic situation.

They're Germany's biggest union. At the foundation it's about countering inflation.
